Meet the Founder

I’m Elizabeth, and I’m so glad you’re here.

I have a lot of gratitude for you taking some time to learn more about me. Whether you landed here because you’re launching an idea into the world or trying to create a more intentional, softer life for yourself, I hope you leave understanding more about me and why I founded my companies. I’m a yapper, so buckle up baby!

Over the past fifteen years, I’ve supported artists, nonprofits, and just plain dope community members and organizations. I strategize and research so people can make whats in their heads a sustainable reality. Graduating from Georgetown Law Center in Washington, D.C. in 2009, plus a PhD in Urban and Public Affairs and oodles of training opportunities helped shaped my entrepreneurial journey.

I’ve had a lot of jobs too. I’ve been an Endowed Chair in a Pan-African Studies Department where I taught classes and wrote about race and the law (my publications are linked below). As a Training Director based in Atlanta, I had the privilege of training public defenders from all across the country from new lawyers to office heads. I also helped guide a team to provide high-level client-centered representation to children charged with crimes in New Orleans. Some of the work I’m most proud of in my entire life is my advocacy for youth incarcerated in secure custody facilities throughout Louisiana.

I’m a proud Louisville, Kentucky native and a Cardinal fan. My hometown heroes are Alberta Jones & Muhammad Ali because they embodied excellence, courage, and impact in the face of extraordinary odds. I was a policy debater in college at the University of Louisville, and if you ask me nicely I’ll tell you how to find a documentary with me in it on YouTube. Back in the early 2000s, our team brought speakers to debate rounds and played organic intellectuals (word to Gramsci) in the form of rappers. Imagine Tupac blasting through the halls at the National Debate Tournament in debates with Ivy Leaguers… that was us.

On my 4th quarter report in kindergarten, my teacher described my personality as forceful and said I could be “bossy.” I was 5, and that observation was quite accurate. You need a little bit of tenacity and gumption to become a JD/PhD. Also, as a Capricorn, I get the job done and I advocate, zealously. My life’s work has been spent advocating for people, asking difficult questions, and helping people navigate systems that weren’t necessarily designed with them in mind. I do that for the clients I work with in my consulting agency. I negotiate, advise, and sometimes shake things up to help folks accomplish a righteous goal.

Not only am I interested in building power for the people, but well-being is a centerpiece of my own personal life. I founded Minding My Garden as a recovering workaholic who experienced burnout and chronic health conditions of my own. The philosophy, Plant. Grow. Flourish. is about tending to your own garden to create something gratifying and delicious, just for you. There’s a cute shop, a Growth Blog, and an online course just for you to curate your own me time.

If you’re building something meaningful or just need to relax, I hope you’ll explore the site and its offerings.

Much love.
